This Saturday was the Texas Scramble with some impressive scoring which saw first place taken by the team of Stuart Dyson, Michael Bowen and Tommy Brennan with a score of 53.8.
For those groups who were unable to play in the Texas Scramble, a regular stableford was held and was won by Kevin Ainley with 31 Points.
Sunday's stableford had some great scoring with only 17 holes in play:
1st Place - Mark Cothay (35 points), 2nd Place - Martin McInulty (34 points) & 3rd Place - Adrian Massey (32 points)
Well done to all.
The work on the 15th hole is still ongoing but will be well worth the wait.
The greens staff will be carrying out verti draining on the greens on Thursday 22nd. This will mean temporary greens, but normal greens will be back on once each hole has been completed.
Why do we verti drain and what are the benefits of verti draining ?
"Verti draining allows the exchange of gases in the soil allowing carbon dioxide out and oxygen in. It will encourage healthier deeper root growth. It aerates the soil and relieves compaction"
"It also helps improve the greens surface, improves and promotes good soil structure and creates quicker drying surfaces along with better absorption of water from the surface into the drainage system, helping prevent surface water problems"
"Verti draining also alleviates problems that greens face such as compacted surfaces after long periods of continuous use"
Preferred lies are now in place on cut and prepared grass only. On fairways, fringes and greens the ball may be marked, lifted and cleaned, then replaced at a point no further than 6 inches from its original position, no nearer the hole. Plugged balls may be marked, lifted, cleaned and then dropped as near to the original spot as possible through the green.
There is one session left of this batch of junior coaching, which will be held on Sunday with everyone venturing out on to the golf course to play a couple of holes. These sessions have been a great success introducing all playing aspects of the game. Over the winter we wish to build on this by creating a second group and looking at more of the game, such as rules, etiquette and skills challenges. Please contact the Professional Shop for more information.
How often is your round spoiled by one hole? It might lead to a couple of poor holes after but there always seems to be one "bogey hole". Now is a good time to break the cycle. I bet that you nearly always take the same club off the tee, fear the same slice into the trees and no matter how hard you try, there is this feeling of impending doom when you're stood there.
Change the way you play the hole. If you always take the driver, try hitting the hybrid or 5 wood. Sure you will be a little further back, from there lay-up, (I know it might sound silly on a par 4), if your handicap allows you a shot, play the hole as a par 5. Give yourself a wedge to the green, you might knock it close and make 4 or a solid 2 putt 5 and walk off happier than before.
