Wilkinson Sword Junior Championship 2017

Once again, we hosted the Wilkinson Sword Junior Championship. I’m sure you will all agree that it is great to have it back up and running for possibly the best trophy in junior golf, (I mean, where else can you say that you actually won a sword). Numbers had increased from last year and would have been greater had there not been a Leeds & District junior match held on the same day. There was some great golf played and some fantastic scores.

  • Winner of the best gross was Max Adams from Wakefield Golf Club.
  • Winner of the best nett was Teddy Semple from Wike Ridge.

A great addition to the day was hosting the JP Junior Series for younger juniors. This 9 hole format will be a great ‘feeder’ towards the Junior Championships in the future.

Latest update

The much needed dry sunny weather has helped the greens recover and they’ve taken the feed well. The team have scarified and top-dressed again to keep on top of things. There have been lots of positive comments from visitors about the course, so its onwards and upwards for us all.

 
 
 
Don't set yourself up to fail

Sometimes the natural routing of the golf course makes our game a little harder, like when we find ourselves with the ball above or below our feet. Situations like these require a little extra concentration and often a few adaptations. The below set-up is another common example of where it’s all too easy to get caught out.

Tee Alignment

ALWAYS KNOW WHERE YOU'RE AIMING

For the vast majority of your round, you’ll find the tee boxes are helpfully aimed down the middle of the fairway. But there are occasions when the architect will try and catch you out by directing you towards trouble.

The best way to counter this danger is to always be 100% sure of your aim before you take the club back, so try using these simple tips.

  • Stand behind the ball and choose your target
  • Draw an imaginary line from that back to your ball
  • Select a divot, broken tee or leaf already in place on that line just in front of your ball
  • At address, align your clubface precisely with the item you chose
  • Align your shoulders, hips and feet parallel to this
