Hello golfers,

Course news

Course update

Mother nature seems to be pretty relentless with the cold, wet weather which has brought all four seasons in one week from beautiful warm sunshine to 6 inches of snow. This has set back some of the intended work on the course and lead to even more water, something we could do without at the minute.

ChunkA large chunk of ground that was taken out of the golf course shows why the course can get very wet and why there is the need for drainage and time for water to disperse.

An increase in the ground temperature is needed so that the grass can start growing again and the work that needs to be done will have a positive effect.

The course is being monitored daily with the hope of returning onto the proper greens soon, however all depends on the weather.

More clear days and some warmth are needed for the grass to recover so that preparations can be made for the season.

Please check the daily course information with regards the course/ holes being open. With the recent poor weather, to save inconvenience, it would be advisable to call ahead.

Competition news

With the course being closed due to the snow this weekend, there were no competitions to report.

However, this month's Winter League winner is Angus Darby with a fantastic 24 points. We go into the final round which is being held at Carnoustie, the sight of one of Padraig Harrington's Open Championship victories and who can forget 1999 where Jean Van Der Velde took a dip in the Barry Burn.

The top 5 currently look like this:

Angus Darby leading the way with 59 points followed in second by Max Holiday with 55 points, in third place is Tim Gerrard on 52 points. Just one point behind in fourth is Neil Coyne with 51 and finally fifth place is held by Chris Burkill on 49 points.

Thought of the week

Getting up and down

This week, we would like you to think about adding some versatility to your chipping.

Instead of always reaching for the 8 iron to 'bump and run' when you're near the green, take a couple of seconds to look at the lie and the shot itself. Would it be better to loft the ball a little higher? You don't need to change your technique necessarily, see what happens when you swap the 8 iron for the pitiching wedge.

5 or 10 minutes practice around the putting green with a couple of different clubs and the same technique could help you get up and down a few more times in the round.

For any more ideas, please speak to Ady or Andy or click here to get in touch

Tried and tested

This week we have tested the Ping G-Max iron.

The larger head and more forgiveness have a fantastic impact on the ball flight. The added weight below the level of the ball means that the clubs launch higher which is great for the longer irons and there is about a massive 10% extra distance on average.
